Chile-geography, climate and vegetation

ABOUT THIS PAGE

When I started to study the fungi of South American Nothofagus forests in 1995, I missed colour illustrations, especially of endemic taxa. Since then, some progress has been made and at least two very useful colour field guides are now available for macrofungi of Southern Argentina and Chile (Gamundi & Horak 1995, Lazo 2001), however these may not be easy to purchase and depict only a rather small number of taxa. This page is meant to be an easily accessible (although still modest) collection of portraits of Chilean fungi which may help the interested person to identify common and less common species or simply to get a glimpse of species diversity of this region. I have taken the photos in the field or in laboratory, mostly with a Nikon Coolpix 950 digital camera at high resolution jpeg format. In the lab, specimens were placed on grey or black cardboard and in most cases an additional slave flash on a tripod was used to improve illumination. I intend to upgrade and extend this page regularly and therefore encourage visitors to send me their critical comments and suggestions by e-mail. In the future I will include additional chapters about fungal ecology, especially mycorrhizal symbiosis in South American Nothofagus forests.
